Shalanda Stanley grew up in Louisiana and earned her BA in creative writing at Florida State University. She has an MEd in special education from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a PhD from LSU in curriculum and instruction, with a focus in reading and literacy education. She’s an assistant professor at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where she also lives with her family.
Man this one was a doozy. It was a slower book to start out then it picks up when the incident happens. This book pulled my heart in so many different ways. But LOVE is the main theme. How do you get over that your mom killed herself and everyone in the small town thinks your going to do the same thing. I mean that has to take a toll on your mind after so long. Then you have the love for a boy friend, best friend, and of course the love for the only parent you have left who has pretty much checked out of your life. I mean come on her dad wasn't even living in the house.
This book was just so amazing. It will give you the answer that after a loss you can only live one day at a time and that every day is a struggle but you don't have to let it rule your life. You need to get up dust your self off and move on. Keep living. I know this first hand.
Many of you know that back in 09 I attempted suicide. My life had fallen apart and I just didnt have anyone to turn to. The help I ended up getting was from the woman who was sharing a room with me. (which if you know anything about being baker acted {prob not spelled right} you are not allowed to be in the room with anyone else.) She was in for some surgery and we talked for the time that she was there. I will be forever grateful for the time she spent with me. I know have been married for 5 years and have one more little girl. And although my life is far from being perfect etc. I know that I have my husband to lean on. (even if he does stupid crap)
I really loved all the characters in this one and wouldn't have minded if the author would have went a little into the future and let us know what everyone was doing. I would say like 5 years or so. But the ending was full and complete.

Where were you born and where do you call home?
I was born in Delhi, Louisiana, a tiny town no one would ever know about except that Tim McGraw (County music great) was also born in the same hospital, putting said hospital on the map so to speak. I grew up not too far from there in another tiny town. So far, no famous people have been born there. After living away from home during college, I moved back to Louisiana to work and raise a family.
If you could live anywhere where would it be?
I’ve never been to Greece, so it might be weird that I’d want to live there, but I do. I don’t know if the photos do it justice, but I’d love to find out.
What HOGWORTS house do you belong to? What about your main characters?
As much as I want to be a Ravenclaw, I’m Hufflepuff all the way. As for my main characters:
Olivia and Jamie, best friends for life, and Maggie are total Gryffindors.
Max, my fighter with a heart of gold, is Ravenclaw.
What is the name of the book you most recently read?
The last book I read was Jeff Zentner’s THE SERPENT KING, a YA novel that comes out in 2016. It’s a fine example of Southern storytelling.
What has been your fav young adult book this year?
There have been so many great YA books this year that I cannot possibly answer that question. Some notable bests for me were MORE HAPPY THAN NOT, MOSQUITOLAND, and CONVICTION.
What was the weirdest question you have been asked?
I haven’t been asked that many weird questions, but the best question I was asked asked me to pick a character from a book that each of my main characters would go to for help and/or advice. That one was a lot of fun to answer.
Can you name a favorite scene from the book?
One of my favorite scenes from DROWNING happens during the first quarter of the book. The teens have just fled from home and are camping out on Lake Maurepas. Nothing major happens in the scene. My characters just talk and laugh while they eat hotdogs over a fire. Even though the stakes are incredibly high and they’re scared, they’re able to find this quiet moment and just be regular teens, if only for a moment.
From your book what character did you like the most? The least? Why?
My favorite character in the book is Jamie and my least favorite character is his father. Jamie is the epitome of what it means to be a best friend. He’s so loyal and honest. His dedication to Olivia is admirable. Jamie’s father on the other hand, is not admirable. He is a mean drunk who gets what’s coming to him.
