{Review} A Criminal Defense

A Criminal Defense: A Harlan Donnally Novel
Betrayal wounds.Revenge destroys.

Over three decades, Hamlin's practice devolved into just another racket: intimidating witnesses, suborning perjury, destroying evidence, laundering money. But is he the victim of murder—or of a dangerous sexual encounter gone wrong? And when law enforcement believes justice has already been done, who can be trusted to find out?

Once again in the city where his career came to a shattering end, former detective Harlan Donnally resolved it wouldn't be him. He had no desire to immerse himself in the deceit that was Hamlin's career . . . nor entangle himself in the corrupted loyalties that turned the dead lawyer's associates into both co-conspirators and suspects . . . nor make himself the proxy for the hatreds and betrayals Hamlin left behind. But the presiding judge demanded otherwise—and that might cost Donnally his life.

The only issue I had with this one was that it had a lot going on!  This book is just under 350 pages but was a fast read!  With unexpected turns and complications this book is a deff must read for those who love thrillers!  The characters are not washed out but are conflicted human beings that makes them feel so real!  I read this in a day as I just couldnt bring myself to put it down.  "*I received a copy of this book for free to review, this in no way influenced my review, all opinions are 100% honest and my own."

Skull Creek Stakeout
The good news is...vampires aren't real. The bad news is...you can't believe the news. After solving the Deadwood ghost story, Nick lands a job as a roving reporter for The Cool Ghoul Gazette, a website on paranormal disturbances. When the editor sends Nick to investigate a murder, Nick finds a corpse sporting fangs, bite marks and a gaping hole in its chest, courtesy of a wooden stake. Will Nick unravel the truth behind the 'blood covenant, ' or will his new job suck the life out of him? Nick Caden has a 'supernatural' knack for finding trouble. He's a normal fourteen-year-old who attracts ghosts, vampires, and the undead---or so it seems. But Nick's relentless search for truth leads him into worlds of darkness with grave consequences, where the dead, dying and deranged walk... on really hot coals

This is a book two of the Caden Chronicles which follows Nick on amazing adventures.  Nick as a character really grew in this one and he didnt ask so many questions which is both good and bad.  This one was very spooky which made it even better!  This is a very short book but, was amazingly good! It is a deff. way to get boys to read!

Alright this one I looked at as soon as I got it! Then my daughter looked at it, then the husband, my mom, lol even the two year old wanted a peek!  When I ordered this I didnt really take the time to see what it really was.  I thought it was just a normal companion book to the movie World War Z.  However, It isn't!  This is full of production shots, drawings, and the ENTIRE SCREENPLAY!! I think they should have stuck with the normal movie companion.  Not that this book isnt neat per say.  But, if you have seen the movie or even if you haven't.  I dont see why anyone would want to have a copy of the screenplay?!

Now saying that I did love some of the new information that was given in this book.  Again wishing it was a normal companion so I could have known more about the process of the Z's would have been amazing!  But anyway here are some wonderful tidbits from the book!

Pg. 142 "The longer the disease has been in the host the more emaciated the host becomes."- Andrew R. Jones, Animation Consultant

Now that was kind of neat!  A few pages back it shows how the Z's go from first being infected to a period of 6 months.  In that time frame the body begins to deteriorate and the skin sucks onto the bone.

Other areas of this book that I would have really loved to know more about are the following.

1. The Green Screen filming
2. The infection itself
3. The locations
4. Misshaps and Mistakes made
5. Any other cool info.

So with this all being said.  If you love having a copy of the screenplay laying around by all means go out and snag this one!  But, if screenplays just are not your thing? Then ya skip this one for something else!

{Review} The Girl Games @JoanHolub

The Girl GamesThe first-ever standalone superspecial in the Goddess Girls series—let the games begin!Athena, Medusa, Artemis, and Persephone are sick and tired of being left out of the annual boys-only Olympic Games. Their solution? The Girl Games! But as the Goddess Girls work to make their dream into a reality, they come up against plenty of chaos and competition. Told in alternating points of view, this superspecial is packed with Olympic spirit!

The Goddess Girls Series
The Goddess Girls series, by Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams puts a modern spin on classic Greek myths. Follow the ins and outs of divine social life where the most privileged godboys and goddessgirls in the Greek pantheon hone their mythical skills.
  • Athena the Brain Finding out she’s a goddess and being sent to Mount Olympus brings Athena new friends, a weird dad, and the meanest girl in mythology—Medusa!
  • Persephone the Phony Hiding her feelings works fine for Persephone until she meets a guy she can be herself with—Hades, the bad-boy of the Underworld.
  • Aphrodite the Beauty Sure Aphrodite is beautiful, but it’s not always easy being the goddessgirl of love.
  • Artemis the Brave She may be the goddess of the hunt, but that doesn’t mean Artemis always feels brave.
  • Athena the Wise Zeus says Heracles has to do twelve tasks or he’ll get kicked out of MOA! Although she’s not sure it’s wise, Athena agrees to help out.
  • Aphrodite the Diva Isis claims she’s the goddess of love? Ha! But to keep the title all to herself, Aphrodite has to find the perfect match for Pygmalion, the most annoying boy ever.
  • Artemis the Loyal It’s time for the annual Olympic Games, and Artemis and her friends are not happy. It’s boys only. Not fair!
  • Medusa the Mean Medusa wants to be more like her two sisters and the other kids at Mount Olympus Academy — immortal. Is that too much to ask?
  • The Girl Games (Goddess Girls Super Special) Listen in on what all four goddess girls are thinking as Mount Olympus Academy hosts visitors from many lands–including an adorable kitten! The first-ever standalone superspecial in the Goddess Girls series!
  • Pandora the Curious Pandora is one of the few mortals at Mount Olympus Academy—and probably the most curious of all the students in school.
  • Pheme the Gossip As the goddess girl of rumor and gossip, Pheme prides herself on being “in the know” and having the most up-to-date info on anyone and everyone at Mount Olympus Academy.

Author Suzanne Williams
Suzanne Williams is the award-winning author of nearly 40 books for children, from picture books and easy readers to chapter books and middle grade fiction series. A former elementary school librarian, she lives near Seattle. Her picture book Library Lil (illustrated by Steven Kellogg) won the New Mexico children’s choice award in 2000 and was on several other state award lists. She is co-author (with Joan Holub) of the popular Goddess Girls series(for ages 8 – 12) and Heroes in Training (ages 6 – 11). Other series include Fairy Blossoms and Princess Power.

Author Joan Holub
I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children’s books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.
I illustrated my first published children’s book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts — Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!
Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children’s books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

This is a great series to introduce your girls to the world of mythologoy.  They are short and fast paced and for ages 8-12.  As the series goes each book is a little thicker.  Which I think is great!  Here is a list of all the books in this wonderful series!  Join us tomorrow as we look at the next one in the series!
