Biography

Hey there, I'm Elizabeth. I write young adult novels. I've had a bunch of jobs over the years--I've sold pantyhose, hardware, and once spent three days burning cds during the dot.com boom (worst. job. ever.)--but hands down, writing is the best! 4 STARS
Heartbeat_back coverI loved the beginning to this one!  In a very short paragraph you get a heart clenching start to this amazing book about a girl who has lost her mother but can not grieve as her mother is hooked up to machines to keep her alive. To save her baby brother, until he can live outside the womb.

I understand what Emma goes through-out the book.  She was a straight A student then after her mom dies school just doesn't mean anything anymore.  The only issue I had with this book was that her mom had only been gone for 45 days.  I think some of this book would have made more sense if it would have been over a longer period of time.  (from the ARC) Other than that this book is a new twist on a coming of age, finding yourself, being able to move on after death, book and it is just wonderful!  Thanks to Harlequin Teen for allowing me the privilege of reading it before its release date!

“Hey,” Olivia says, and I know it’s her because I would know her voice anywhere. We’ve been friends since fifth grade, and we’ve been through period trauma, boy crap, bad hair, her parents and their ways. And now Dan and his baby.
“Hey,” I say. I wipe my eyes and look at her. “How’s the car?”
Olivia makes a face at me but also wraps an arm around my shoulders, steering me toward our lockers. Her parents gave her a fully loaded convertible when she got her license, one with a built-in music player, phone, navigation system—you name it, the car had it. Could do it, and all at the touch of a button.
Olivia sold the car—through the one newspaper left in the area, which is basically just ads—and bought a used car. It’s so old all it has is a CD player and a radio. We bought CDs at yard sales for a while, but all we could get was old music, which we both hate, and the radio is just people telling you that what they think is what you should think, so we mostly just drive around in silence.
It used to bother me sometimes but now I like it. The inside of my head is so full now that silence is…I don’t know. There’s just something about knowing Olivia is there, and that we don’t have to talk. That she gets it. Gets me and what’s going on.
Her parents were unhappy about the car, though. Really unhappy, actually, but then there was a big crisis with one of their server farms at work and by the time they surfaced for air they hadn’t slept in four days. And when they said, “Olivia, that car was a gift,” she said, “Yes, it was. A gift, meaning something freely given, for the recipient to use as she wanted to, right?”
As we hit her locker, we pass Anthony, and he says, “Ladies,” bowing in my direction. A real bow too, like it’s the nineteenth century or something.
“Ass,” Olivia says.
“A donkey is actually not as stupid as people believe. However, you are entitled to your own beliefs about asses. And me.” He looks at me. “Hello, Emma.”
I sigh. “Hi, Anthony.”
“If you ever want to talk about your grades, do know that I’m here.”
I can’t believe I ever thought the way he talked was interesting. It’s just stupid, like he’s too good to speak like a normal person. “I know, Anthony.”
“I really would like to be of assistance to you. I believe in helping everyone. I’m talking to Zara Johns later. I think she feels threatened by the fact that I’ve been asked to help her organize the next school blood drive.” Translation: he’s butted in, and Zara’s furious.
“Either that or she just doesn’t like you. Emma, let’s go,” Olivia says, slamming her locker shut, and we head for mine.
“You okay?” she says, and I nod. Anthony doesn’t bother me at all anymore, just like Mom said would happen. I look at him and feel nothing. Well, some annoyance, but then, who wouldn’t after listening to him talk?
Of course, I didn’t always think that he was annoying. I open my locker, deciding not to go down the Anthony road, and hear the guy next to me say, “No way! I mean, everyone knows what’ll happen to Caleb if he steals another car.”
Olivia and I glance at each other. If Anthony is the ass end of the smart part of the school, Caleb Harrison is the ass end of the stupid part. He’s a total druggie and three years ago, when we were freshmen, he came to school so high he couldn’t even talk. I heard that stopped last year, but then, as soon as school got out, his parents sent him off to some “tough love camp,” which is rich-people code for boot-camp rehab.
He came back seemingly off drugs but newly into stealing cars. He started by grabbing them at the mall and parking them in a different spot, but then he stole a teacher’s car.
And then he graduated to a school bus. It was empty at the time, but still, I heard that got him a couple of weeks in juvie, or would have except for his parents, who intervened. I guess now he’s taken yet another step forward and by lunchtime, I know what Caleb stole.
His father’s brand-new, limited-edition Porsche. And he didn’t just steal it. He drove it into the lake over by the park, drove right off the highway and into the water. The police found him sitting on the lake’s edge, watching the car sink. They were able to pull it out, but water apparently isn’t good for the inside of a Porsche.
“You think he’ll go to jail this time?” Olivia asks as we sit picking at our lunches. I love that we have lunch together this semester, but it’s the first lunch block, and it’s hard to face food—especially cafeteria food—at 10:20 in the morning.
“I guess it depends on his parents,” I say. “Last time they talked to the judge or whatever. They’ll probably just ship him off again. He must hate them, though.”
“Yeah. To sit by the lake and watch the car sink like that—”
“Exactly.”
“Even when my parents are sucking their lives away with all their computer crap, I’d never do anything like mess with their stuff,” she says. “How can you hate someone who raised you, who loves you so—” She breaks off.
“Dan didn’t raise me,” I say tightly. “And he doesn’t love me. Or Mom.”
Olivia nods and I think about hate. I understand what can make someone do what Caleb did, although I don’t think a bored, rich druggie really gets hate. Not real hate.

{Review} Pawn @aimee_carter @HarlequinTeen {Best Read of 2013}

YOU CAN BE A VII. IF YOU GIVE UP EVERYTHING.
Review: Pawn by Aimee Carter
For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed …and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

5 STARS!

Ok this book was just beyond amazing!  Fans of The Selection and The Hunger Games will love this story about a girl who will risk her life to not only save the life of her man but also to change the way that they live.

Fav Quotes:

Risking my life to steal an orange was a stupid thing to do, but today of all days, I didn’t care about the consequences.

Never forget the potential one solitary pawn has to change the enter game.

In Kitty Doe's world there is a system like that in The Selection.  When you turn 17 you take a test and then you are ranked from I to VI.  If you get a I you are sent to a place called Elsewhere and are pretty much never seen or heard from again.  Well poor Kitty whom can't read (guessed she had Dyslexia)  ends up getting a III which is not to bad but not as good as she would have liked.  So she decided to make the choice to go to a brothel. (for those who are worried about that content don't be.  It is very sparse and not explicit.) While being actioned off for her virginity which is sold to the Prime Minister for 30,000 gold pieces (reminded me of the Memoirs of Geisha) she is given the choice to become a VII which is only given to their leaders the Hart Family.

Well this story really picks up there.  From the death of a lot of her friends to making and creating new ones.  Poor Kitty Doe is tossed into a world of luxury while being a prisoner in her own body.  I loved the characters that Aimee has created.  Grayson, Kitty, and Knox were my favs.  Kitty doesn't let people tell her what to do and she really does stand up for herself and for those she loves.  The Prime Minister really is evil and I can't wait to see what they do with him and this story when book two comes out.

This review is so hard to write without giving a lot of it away. Kitty becomes Lila Hart and the story goes on with twists and turns you won't see coming to an all out war that I so can't wait to see where the story goes from here.

The one thing this book teaches you is that even if you have issues that prevent you from doing some things. Like Kitty having Dyslexia and not being able to read.  There are always things you can do to compensate for it.  And you should always believe in yourself.

Words can not tell you how much I loved this book!  So here is a group spree cast video via me and Frishawn from WTF Are You Reading.com discussing why we loved Pawn so much!

"*I own it!"

I wanted to wish everyone happy holidays today!
While many are celebrating with family we will be at universal for today.
We always try to do something different for Christmas. Normally we would go to the movies but this year we decided to do something else.  And screaming on a roller coster sounded like a great idea!

{Spotlight} Amethyst Eyes @amethysteyes01 @gmtaliterary

The biggest thing on 15-year-old Tommy's mind is convincing Mom to let him go to the drive-in, but when an accident claims his mother's life and puts him in the hospital, the arrival of his estranged, alien father brings more changes than he had bargained for. It doesn't take his father long to figure out that Tommy knows nothing about who or what he is. Without any explanation, Tommy finds himself onboard his father's spaceship where he is forced to trust a man he does not know in a world he knows even less about.
Adapting to his new life seems overwhelming, and his father's solution may prove to be Tommy's finest challenge yet...Jayden. A few months younger than Tommy, high strung and always in a mood, the doctor's daughter definitely didn't like being 'told' to help Tommy fit in. Jayden is not the most welcoming or patient of tutors, let alone a friend. As fate would have it, Tommy quickly learns that none of these things compare to the peril that comes from being born with amethyst eyes.

Biography

For as long as she can remember, Debbie has been creating stories in her head. She hated to go anywhere without a pen and paper, just in case. As a graduate of the Institute of Children's literature, while pursuing yet another writing course, she finds herself doing what she loves . . . learning and writing. The course gives her an excuse to just sit down and write. Over the years she has worked as a nurse, a teacher, a martial arts instructor and a CIC officer in the Canadian Forces. Her hobbies have varied from woodworking, to auto-mechanics, with music, painting, karate, holistic medicine, gardening and camping thrown into the mix. Let's not forget reading. Debbie's perfect cure for a long winter's night is curling up in front of a fire with a good book while snowflakes drift slowly past the window. Never having been much of a city girl, she lives with two of her four children, her husband Jean-Pierre and their pets in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec. She couldn't imagine life without the beauty found in the trees, mountains and lakes that surround her.

{Review} {Giveaway} Vitro @jkbibliophile @Razorbill

VitroA death-defying tropical adventure delivers a frightening message about dabbling with creation from the talented author of Origin.

On a remote island in the Pacific, Corpus scientists have taken test tube embryos and given them life. These beings—the Vitros—have knowledge and abilities most humans can only dream of. But they also have one enormous flaw.

Sophie Crue is determined to get to Skin Island and find her mother, a scientist who left Sophie behind years ago. She enlists hunky charter pilot Jim Julien to take her there. But once on the island, Sophie and Jim encounter more than they bargained for, including a charming, brilliant Vitro named Nicholas and an innocent, newly awoken one named Lux.

In a race for their lives, Sophie and Jim are about to discover what happens when science stretches too far beyond its reach

1 Star
I am so sad to write this. I died to get a copy of this book. Even just an eARC and when it came in print I was again over joyed to read it.  Well I sped through Origin which was great. Then went on to Vitro and everything was WONDERFUL until you get to chapter 11.

Then things start falling apart. It all starts off in Two POVs which was great and even the addition of Lux was better.  But when you have Lux and Sophie being mistook for each other you are going to make me believe that a girl (Sophie) who just survived a crash, trekked through the jungle, and has been living in the real world for 17 years is going to pass for (Lux) a girl who has essentially been in a coma in a clean environment for the same duration and to top it all off has a chip in her head.

So you are going to tell me that in the moment of her waking up that the scientists are not going to be monitoring that chip and her vitals?  They they are so smart to create this tech but not smart enough to see that these two girls have been in two completely different situations.  That was a little to far fetched for my takes on this book.
Pic one is how I see Sophie still pretty but normal! Pic two is how I would see Lux clean like REALLY CLEAN!

So as I hope you understand where I'm coming from.  There is no way that within two chapters Sophie and Lux could go from two completely different worlds to going to one where they both look enough the same for these scientists to think they are each other!
