#BookReview: The Evil Queen (The Forest of Good and Evil, #1) by Gena Showalter

Synopsis: WELCOME TO THE FOREST OF GOOD AND EVIL.

A DREAM COME TRUE…AND A LIVING NIGHTMARE.

Far, far away, in the realm of Enchantia, creatures of legend still exist, magic is the norm and fairy tales are real. Except, fairy tales aren’t based on myths and legends of the past—they are prophecies of the future.

Raised in the mortal realm, Everly Morrow has no idea she’s a real-life fairy-tale princess—until she manifests an ability to commune with mirrors.

Look. See… What will one peek hurt?

Soon, a horrifying truth is revealed. She is fated to be Snow White’s greatest enemy, the Evil Queen.

With powers beyond her imagination or control, Everly returns to the land of her birth. There, she meets Roth Charmaine, the supposed Prince Charming. Their attraction is undeniable, but their relationship is doomed. As the prophecy unfolds, Everly faces one betrayal after another, and giving in to her dark side proves more tempting every day. Can she resist, or will she become the queen—and villain—she was born to be?

The battle between good and evil is on.

My Review: This book is just shy of 550 pages and that being said I wished it would have been shorter.  I know I love big books but this one went a little overboard if you ask me.  It could've been two books and been much better.  There's a lot of unpack here so lets get started.

First off this book starts with a history lesson. Which could have been a story all on its own. One that I kind of wanted to know more about.  The second thing is that it then has a prologue. And then we finally go into chapter one.  It was a very long time to start the actual title in this one.

Once the story got going it was ok for the most part but parts of this story just dragged way too much.  I stand by my thoughts that this one could have been split into two titles or  at least cut down a bit. I love Showalter's writing but this one was just kind of meh in parts.

Overall, this one felt like for a majority of the book it was just blabbing alone with nothing to say.  Then you get some great action, and an awesome journey.

"Showalter (the Everlife books) delivers an entertaining series opener that condemns prejudice while championing self-determination. Romance-sweet and steamy, gay and straight-features prominently, action and humor abound, and the mystery of how each character figures into the legend imparts intrigue."-Publishers Weekly

"The novel's conceit has a lot of potential with its deconstruction of a cherished fairy tale, an interesting take on good and evil as actions rather than fate, and a long cast of characters in ever evolving roles that will leave readers wondering who they are supposed to be."-Kirkus Reviews
