#BookReview: Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day by Seanan McGuire @TorBooks

Synopsis: "Emily Bauer's narration of this contemporary ghost story is a poignant, pitch-perfect success...[Her] remarkable ability to shift between various Southern accents and intonations infuses the dialogue with emotional depth and insight." — AudioFile Magazine

When her sister Patty died, Jenna blamed herself. When Jenna died, she blamed herself for that, too. Unfortunately Jenna died too soon. Living or dead, every soul is promised a certain amount of time, and when Jenna passed she found a heavy debt of time in her record. Unwilling to simply steal that time from the living, Jenna earns every day she leeches with volunteer work at a suicide prevention hotline.

But something has come for the ghosts of New York, something beyond reason, beyond death, beyond hope; something that can bind ghosts to mirrors and make them do its bidding. Only Jenna stands in its way.

Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day is a new standalone urban fantasy novella from New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire.

My Review: Jenna and her family are having a hard time coping with Pattys death.  After her sister's funeral Jenna runs and runs farther and farther away from home.  However she isn't looking where she is going and falls to her death.  Though she quickly finds out that death isn't the same for everyone.  She goes to New York and starts working for a suicide hotline to help make up for time she was supposed to have in her life before she passed.  Though I really love the premise of this book this is not my favorite work by McGuire.  I would love to hear more about Jenna's afterlife world and her adventures and those she meets however this is a standalone.  I do like the fact that in this world the ghost and humans live in harmony however the humans do not know this.  If a ghost touches a human they steal “time” from them to help them pass.  I really like this take on the afterlife that they have the option to help keep people alive.  I also like how she is willing to earn her way toward her death day versus the option of stealing time from humans and killing them.  Though I still wish there would be another book in this series I still think that it was an enjoyable read and look forward to reading more by McGuire.

Review

"Sure to still be on my list of the best for 2017 at the end of the year. McGuire’s very original take on ghosts (and witchcraft, for that matter) produces a moving tale.’’ ―Locus

"This tightly paced adventure will win hearts with a charming protagonist and a well-earned ending." ―Publishers Weekly

"A spooky, atmospheric love letter to New York and its shifting moods, skylines and people." ― Sophia McDougall, author of the Romanitas trilogy
