For Mayana, the only daughter of the Chicome family whose blood controls the power of water, the old emperor's death may mean that she is next. Prince Ahkin must be married before he can ascend the throne, and Mayana is one of six noble daughters presented to him as a possible wife. Those who are not chosen will be sacrificed to the gods.

My Review: OMG so all cards on the table I almost DNFed this one!! I know how crazy is that? So I am very glad that I gave this one a second chance because it was OMG AMAZING!!! This book centers around the cultures from Mesoamerica with fantasy aspects tossed in and I have to say that the author has a hit! I loved the blend of of cultures with the fantasy themes it just worked so well.
The characters in this one were great. I loved the dual POV which worked to not only tell us a well rounded story but also just made it so you knew what both characters were feeling. I would love more stories set in this world about other characters. Because each of them are just that important.
The story had a bunch of great twists and turns that I did not see coming and I am so glad that I have book two because I am going to die until I get my hands on book three!!

About the Author
Lani Forbes is the daughter of a librarian and an ex-drug smuggling surfer (which explains her passionate love of the ocean and books). A former teacher turned trauma counselor, her passion is showing readers the transformative and encouraging power of story on the human experience. She helps others process anxiety, depression, and complex PTSD, both in her stories and in real life. A California native whose parents live in Mexico, Lani now resides in the Pacific Northwest where she stubbornly wears flip flops no matter how cold it gets. She is a proud nerd, Gryffindor, and member of Romance Writers of America and the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
