#BookReview: Shielded (Shielded #1) by @kaylynnflanders

Synopsis: For fans of Sorcery of Thorns and Furyborn comes a thrilling new fantasy about a kingdom ravaged by war, and the princess who might be the key to saving not only those closest to her, but the kingdom itself, if she reveals the very secret that could destroy her.

The kingdom of Hálendi is in trouble. It's losing the war at its borders, and rumors of a new, deadlier threat on the horizon have surfaced. Princess Jennesara knows her skills on the battlefield would make her an asset and wants to help, but her father has other plans.

As the second-born heir to the throne, Jenna lacks the firstborn's--her brother's--magical abilities, so the king promises her hand in marriage to the prince of neighboring Turia in exchange for resources Hálendi needs. Jenna must leave behind everything she has ever known if she is to give her people a chance at peace.

Only, on the journey to reach her betrothed and new home, the royal caravan is ambushed, and Jenna realizes the rumors were wrong--the new threat is worse than anyone imagined. Now Jenna must decide if revealing a dangerous secret is worth the cost before it's too late--for her and for her entire kingdom.

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Jennesara was second born, meaning she was not supposed to have magic. She has light hair and eyes, and the tell-tale sign of a white streak of hair was apparent on her brother, the firstborn. But she has a secret she has been keeping, braiding her hair her whole life to hide the white streak of her own. Jennesara finds out that she has been betrothed to the prince of Turia and is expected to leave in two days, just after her birthday. She must wed the prince, who has dark hair and eyes, and save her kingdom from the mages who threaten to destroy her home and her family. Jennesara is like many strong-willed, confident female characters. She is stubborn and learns quickly through trial and error. The story starts by world and character building and is somewhat slow, but quickly picks up the pace as soon as the action starts. While there are many stories about magic, Flanders has made magic a little different, and Flanders avoids the love triangle trope. VERDICT Fantasy lovers will be glad they chose to keep reading.—Rena Gibson, Ralph Ellison Lib., Oklahoma City --This text refers to the hardcover edition.
