Then a cyclone rips through the night and carries her, her dog, and the farmhouse somewhere a lot farther than Dorothy imagined. She’s in a strange land that’s apparently cursed, shrouded in shadow. And to get home, Dorothy needs to seek out a wizard, following a treacherous path and watch out for a never-ending list of forest beasts, witches, a cursed mercenary, and perhaps most dangerous of all, the wizard himself.
Nikki St. Crowe vividly reimagines the world of the Wizard of Oz, where the villain gets the girl...and the girl gets the power.
This one ended up being such a surprise for me. I originally picked it up as an eARC and ended up DNFing it pretty early on because it just wasn’t pulling me in at the time. But since I’ve been deep in my audiobook era while driving, I decided to give it another shot—and I’m honestly so glad I did.
The audiobook completely changed the experience for me. Once the story clicked, I was hooked. The pacing felt stronger, the tension built in a way that kept me engaged, and I found myself actually looking forward to getting back in the car just so I could keep listening.
The spice was really well placed throughout the story. It didn’t feel overdone or random, and when it showed up, it hit exactly when it needed to. It added to the story instead of taking away from it, which I always appreciate.
I will say I did figure out part of the ending ahead of time, but that main twist? Absolutely not. That completely caught me off guard in the best way and made the ending feel worth the ride.
Now I’m sitting here trying to decide if I want to continue the series in audio or go back to reading my eARC for book two, because I definitely need more of this story.
