And then there are the books that quietly catch my attention and make me think, “Okay, I need to keep an eye on this one.”
Welcome to On My Radar, where I’ll be highlighting upcoming and newly released books that have caught my attention and landed somewhere on my ever-growing TBR.
This week, that book is Monster, Monarch, Maiden by Rae Carson.
I’ll admit, the first thing that caught my attention was the description. A mountain girl with a magical Gift she considers nearly useless, a mysterious young man on a dangerous quest, monsters, magic, gods, political intrigue, and a slow-burn romance?
Yeah… you have my attention.
Bria Angarsold isn't supposed to be a hero. She's a mountain girl living a fairly ordinary life until raiders destroy her family and everything she knows. After being captured, she crosses paths with Titus, a secretive young man on a perilous quest. With nowhere else to go, Bria joins him, eventually following him toward the Edge of the World.
And apparently, her supposedly useless Gift might not be so useless after all.
The more I read about this book, the more it sounds like exactly the kind of fantasy adventure I enjoy: a journey, magic, secrets, characters who have to figure out who they really are, and just enough romance to keep things interesting.
It's also a standalone, which honestly deserves its own little celebration these days. 😂 Sometimes I want to fall into a fantastic new world without immediately discovering that I have six more books, three novellas, and a prequel standing between me and the end of the story.
Monster, Monarch, Maiden is Rae Carson's newest novel and was released on August 25, 2026. Early readers are already responding positively, with Goodreads currently showing it at over four stars from reader ratings.
And while I haven't decided yet whether this one is going to make it from “on my radar” to “on my currently-reading list,” it definitely has my attention.
Sometimes that's all it takes.
A pretty cover.
An interesting premise.
A little magic.
A little romance.
And the promise of an adventure that might completely suck you in.
So for now, Monster, Monarch, Maiden is officially on my radar.
