What were your favorite books you read when you were in middle school?

When I was in middle school, I liked books that transported me into worlds far far away from my own home on the Upper West Side. The foreign lands they took me to could be real or make believe; it didn’t matter as long as they gave me a taste of lives that were very different from my own. I often discovered these books by browsing in my parents’ library and the sense of having found them myself made them all the more intriguing.
Here are a few I remember:
The Midnight Folk by John Masefield took me sailing on the high seas, swimming with mermaids, flying on broomsticks and riding on a magical horse.
The Moomin series by Tove Jansson took me to the marvelous Moominland.
My Antonia by Willa Cather gave me a glimpse into the harsh rural immigrant life on the Nebraska prairie.
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R.Tolkien took me to Middle Earth.
The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling took me to India.
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck introduced me to family life in a Chinese village by the Yangtze River before World War I.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain took me down the Mississippi River.
My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett took me to the imaginary Wild Island.
Hitty, Her First Hundred Years by Rachel Field took me around the world from a doll’s point of view.
The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle took me to Sherwood Forest with a swashbuckling band of outlaws.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum took me to the extraordinary land of Oz. (I read the whole series.)
Pinocchio by C. Collodi took me to the Land of Boobies where boys turned into donkeys and into the belly of a “gigantic Dogfish!”
My World and Welcome To It by James Thurber invited me into “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll took me to Wonderland of course!
The Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne took me to Hades and to Mt. Olympus and swept me into the world of Greek myths.
Andrew Lang’s Fairy Books took me east of the sun and west of the moon.
