#BookReview: In the Roses of Pieria (The Blood Files, #1) by Anna Burke

Synopsis: Award-winning author Anna Burke delivers the shivers in this daring queer dark fantasy romance teeming with sensuous vampires, dark academia, plant horrors, and terrifying fungal fae.

When Clara Eden is offered a job as an archivist working for eccentric estate owner Agatha Montague, she thinks her prayers have been answered. Soon, she finds herself sucked into her research world, captivated by a romantic correspondence thousands of years old. But as her feelings for her employer's assistant, Fiadh, deepen, so does her suspicion that something about Agatha Montague isn't right. Unfortunately for Clara, it is far too late to run by the time her suspicions are confirmed..

My Review: My main issue with this one was plausibility.  I actually have a degree in the field that is talked about in this story. And I have to say that this depiction was crap.  I wish that authors would do their homework for things instead of just assuming you wouldn't need a degree or any kind of formal training for things. And the amount of money this girl is getting without anything in her background is outrages.  So the story itself if you overlook this inconsistency, wasn't horrible but it wasn't all that good as well.  I ended up DNFing this one around the 50% mark because I was just so bored out of my mind.

Review

“Like a lover adept in the art of coy seduction, In The Roses of Pieria is an ancient mystery that reveals its beauty one layer at a time, a particular bouquet of luxurious prose and Sapphic heat, equal parts enchantment and violence. It begs to be savored, but from the first taste proves impossible not to devour in a single sitting.” —Rae Knowles, Author of The Stradivarius and Merciless Waters

“Anna Burke at her sublime best. If you are looking for a book to whisk you away into a haunting world of secrets, shadows and imagination, In the Roses Of Pieria will do that with aplomb. The writing is lyrical, the imagery breathtaking.” —Milena McKay, Lambda Literary Award-winning author of The Headmistress

“A lesbian archivist gets hot and bothered over her employer's ancient immortal romance and undocumented Sappho collection. In the Roses of Pieria is nerdy, haunting, and full of longing.” —Lianyu Tan, Lambda Literary Award-winning author of Captive in the Underworld

“Anna Burke weaves a tale dripping with mystery, secrets, and Sapphic love old and new. You won't want to put it down.” —Amy Marsden, author of We’re All Monsters Here
