Welcome Author Christina Smith

Today, Never Too Old for YA Books and I would like to welcome author Christina Smith. As part of our Indie celebration, Christina has agreed to answer a few of our most intriguing questions!
You may know Christina's work:

Title: Fated Dreams (Book One in the Affinity Series)
Publication Date: March 1, 2012
Blurb from Goodreads:
Do you believe in true love? Sarah Samson didn’t until she met hers. But for Sarah, meeting the guy of her dreams came with a price. On the outside Sarah looks like she has it all, friends, a loving family, and a hobby she's really good at. But if you look closer, Sarah's keeping secrets, from everyone in her life, even... Lucas. A boy she hardly knows, but still feels a connection with.

Life would be perfect, if it wasn't for the constant feeling that someone is following her. She feels a presence everywhere she goes, work, home, even...in her dreams.

She suddenly finds herself wrapped up in a dangerous mystery that started eighty years ago involving two tragic deaths. After several attempts on her life, she and Lucas realize they must solve it before history repeats itself

Title: Delusions (Book Two in The Affinity Series)
Publication Date: June 15, 2012
Blurb from Goodreads:
Can Fate be wrong? When all signs point to a certain someone, do you just blindly follow? What if that person turns out to be someone you hate? Could Destiny be so cruel? Lisa Miller is busy with family, work, friends and…revenge. Her last summer in high school should be spent, having fun. But ever since Logan Tate played a prank on her, she spends all of her free time trying to get even

And a little about our author:

I grew up in Kingston Ontario, Canada, and after getting married, moved to a small rural town in the country. I live here with my husband Brad, two kids Josh and Megan, and our dog Bailey. Even though our house is peaceful, surrounded by nature and the occasional deer, I'm still a city girl at heart. I miss civilization, and visits with my mother and two sisters.
As a teen, when all my friends were out having fun, I was inside reading, and have been found at school with novels hidden behind my text books. I've always loved to read, but didn't realize I could write until a few years ago. I have told stories my whole life, but never thought to write them down.
Once I put pen to paper and realized that it wasn't half bad, I took a novel writing course at Winghill Writing School, and since then have written four books. Two are finished, the others are being edited.
I spend a lot of my free time writing, and have numerous ideas for future novels, for both Young Adult, and Adult fiction.
My book Fated Dreams was named Semi-finalist in the 2011 Text-novel writing contest.

You can find Christina on the following sites:

And now for Christina to answer our questions!

1. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

About three years ago, I had no idea I had the ability. I was watching Stephanie Myers on Oprah the year New Moon was coming out, and Stephanie said that she didn't know that it wasn't normal to make up stories in your mind; she thought every one did it. Oprah told her that no, it's not normal. When I heard that, I glanced at my husband and said, "It's not?"

Like Stephanie, I had told myself stories all my life, and thought everyone else did too. And when I heard this, I started to think about all the stories I had created. Only two stood out. Fated Dreams was one of them.

2. How long does it take you to write a book?

All together, I would guess six months. But I haven't worked on one solely yet. I wrote the first draft of Fated Dreams in a few weeks, and it was terrible. Then I took a novel writing course at Winghill Writing School, polished it up and thought it was done. It wasn't. I don't know how many revisions I've made on it, but it's been at least twenty over the last three years. But since then, I am able to write a book with a lot less. Delusions, was the fourth book I wrote, and I think I did four revisions and I estimate it took about four months all together.

3. What do you think makes a great story?

Personally I love a story in the first person; I feel the reader connects more to the main character.

Mystery, and suspense, you have to keep the reader interested.

And of course romance. I'm married and have been with my husband for sixteen years. I will never feel the joy of falling in love for the first time again…unless I pick up a book.

4. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

When I first realized I could write, I wrote all the time. Finding my passion was new to me and I couldn't stop myself. But I've mellowed a bit since then. I still I don’t really have a schedule. I wish I did, but I'm a really good procrastinator, so I write when inspiration hits.

5. How do you balance family and writing?

I haven't really figured that out yet. If I had more of a set schedule I could write during the day while the kids are at school and my husband is at work, but it hasn't quite worked out that way.

6. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Different places. The first (Fated Dreams) was from another book by LJ Smith. It was the first time I read about soul mates, and fell in love with the concept.

Delusions came about because I couldn't get Logan out of my head. There wasn't meant to be a sequel to Fated Dreams.

The others I really don't remember; they just popped into my head. I have one idea that I have on the back burner that I dreamed of. At first I thought nothing of it. The plot is something I never thought I would write about, but then I remembered that Twilight started from a dream, so I wrote the idea down.

7. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That I could actually write. I have always loved to read but didn't know I could write, actually I never thought to try.

8. How many books have you written? Which is your favourite?

I have written four books but I have separated one into a prequel, so I guess five.

And it's hard to pick a favorite. When I try, I feel guilty about the other ones. Just like with my children, and in some ways I guess they are. I did create them.

9. Are your characters based on anyone you know?

Yes and no. The girl on the cover of Fated Dreams is my niece Courtney, but I asked her because she was handy and had brown hair. I wrote Sarah during my obsession with the TV series, The Vampire Diaries, so I guess Sarah is based on Nina Dobrev.

The main character in the book I'm working on now is named Megan after my daughter. But they only share the same hair color, that’s where the similarities end.

The only character based on someone I know, is Lisa's sister Olivia, in Delusions. I developed her from my two year old niece Summer.

10. Do you have a favourite place you love to write?

Yes, in my room on my bed. My husband calls it my cave.

11. How hard is it to get published?

Extremely, since I'm not. I self-published.

I sent in most of my books to many agents in Canada and the US, and no one was interested. I think I sent them before they were ready, but since they don't want the same books sent twice, I'll never know. I won't give up though; I have one more to send out.

12. What do your family and friends think about your books?

They were surprised as I was when I wrote them, but they love my novels. Most of my family has read them all, but now that I self published, my mother is re-reading them.

13. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Read, spend time with my family.

14. Do you have any suggestions to help aspiring writers better themselves and their craft? If so, what are they?

Write when inspiration hits, keep a notebook. Read lots of books on the genre of their choice. And if it's young adult books their interested in writing, watch teen shows and movies. It's difficult to write about a teen when your not one, so study them.

I took an online course at WingHill writing school, and that really helped me.

15. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

Doesn't every little girl want to be a princess? But as I grew up I figured that wouldn't work out, so I decided on an Architect, even though I'm horrible at math. And then I remember I wanted to sell houses.

But I really didn't know what I wanted to be. I took a semester in college for early childhood education just because my friend was taking it. It didn't work out. I hated that I didn't have something I was passionate about. I was really thankful when I found it.

16. What are your favourite books and which authors inspire you?

I have so many, but the ones that have lasted are Anne of Green Gables, and Pride and Prejudice.

Young Adult books would have to be, The Twilight Series, If I Stay, Where She Went, and The Iron Fey Series, and so many others that I can't choose.

Stephanie Myers, Gale Forman, Julie Kagawa

17. What's it like to be self published?? How did you do it??

I've only been self-published for about a few months and so far, I find it challenging to get the word out about my books. Thankfully I found goodreads, it's been so helpful.

I really didn't know that you could self-publish until I read about Amanda Hocking, and then it took awhile to find out how to do it. But cruising through other self-published books gave me the information. I started at Smashwords.com and they are great, they send out your book to lots of ebook stores, and now I just recently published on amazon as well.

18. What are you working on now?

A new series called A Moon's Glow. I'm just touching up the prequel, called Riley's Curse, and the first in the series called Riley's Secret. They will be out in the next week or two.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Christina! It was great having you here!

Welcome Author Charlotte Abel

As part of our Indie month celebration, Never Too Old for YA Books and I have the pleasure of interviewing Charlotte Abel!
You may know Charolotte's books:

Sixteen year old Channie Kerns leads an idyllic life of seclusion and magic deep in the Ozark Mountains ... until her family is forced to flee for their lives.

They leave everything and everyone behind to start over in Louisville, Colorado. Magic is forbidden while they are in hiding, but Channie can't resist the temptation to enchant a group of local boys. When her overbearing parents catch her flirting with these "sex-crazed, non-magical delinquents," they slap a chastity spell on her to protect her virtue.

The spell is triggered by lust, so just navigating the halls at her new school is an ordeal. She can't even touch a boy she's attracted to without blasting him with a jolt of magical energy that feels like a taser.

When Channie falls in love with Josh Abrim, a BMX racer with dangerous secrets of his own, she rebels against her parents and turns to dark and forbidden magic to break the chastity spell ... with disastrous results.

and

Bound by love and magic. Betrayed by those they trust. Not everyone survives.

Gasp-out-loud action, heart-pounding romance and an OMG ending that leaves you hungry for the next book.

And if you don't know, this is what Charlotte looks like!

And now for our interview of Charlotte:

1. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I had some short stories and poems published in an anthology in high school. Seeing my work in print for the first time was such a rush, I wanted to do it again … and again … and yeah, I'm totally addicted.
2. How long does it take you to write a book?
It depends on the book ;-) "Enchantment" took a year from initial concept to publication. It started out as a short story I wrote during Orson Scott Card's Literary Bootcamp July, 2010. The first draft was done by the end of October. It took another nine months of rewriting and editing before I felt it was good enough to share. Book two, "Taken," was much faster. I already knew the characters, had the magic system worked out and outlined it before I started writing. (I wrote "Enchantment" by the seat of my pants.)
3. What do you think makes a great story?
Characters that feel so real you think about them, even when you aren't reading; a plot with high stakes; a touch of humor and a romance that makes you sigh out loud.
4. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
When I'm home, I write (or do writerly things like this interview) for eight hours a day six days a week. I try to take one day a week off to spend with my husband. But when I escape to the mountains, I'll write for fifteen hours a day, seven days a week.
5. How do you balance family and writing?
Balance? What's that?
My (adult) son came over today and dragged me away from the computer. He said he was here for the intervention. My kids are all grown, so I don't have the same responsibilities a lot of younger writers have.
I do have a husband so I make a point of taking a break when he comes home from work. We eat together and watch TV or a movie until he falls asleep on the couch. I'm a night owl, so I get another couple of hours of writing in before I go to bed.
6. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
I get an idea for a character and then they take on a life of their own. I originally wanted Josh to be a cheerleader, but he threw a fit and insisted he was a BMX racer, which made my job a lot harder since I knew nothing about BMX racing.
I went to the track in Dacono, Colorado to research the sport and David Herman was there. I'm embarrassed to say I had no idea who he was at the time (He's on the USA BMX olympic team and will be competing in a few days!) He's a super nice guy, and reminds me a lot of Josh.
7. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That there is real power in fiction. I'm an extreme introvert and have a hard time connecting with strangers, but I've found it's a lot easier to talk to people that've read my books (and liked them). One of my earliest readers is now a life-long friend. She lives in California, but we try to see each other at least once a year. I'm going to the Decatur Book Festival with her at the end of August and can't wait to meet some of the other writers I've met through their stories and mine. Nancy Straight, Shannon Dermott, Amy Bartol and Shelly Crane will be there and I can NOT wait!
8. How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
I've published the first two books of The Channie Series and have two other series that are "mostly" written, but they're in rough shape and need lots of work. I'm almost done with "River's Recruit" the first book of "The Sanctuary Series."
9. Are your characters based on anyone you know?
Nope.
10. Do you have a favourite place you love to write?
Yes! We have a condo on the Blue River in Silverthorne, Colorado. I love to go there in the early fall, before ski season starts. It's so peaceful.
11. How hard is is to get published?
Not hard at all, as the gazillions of eBooks on Amazon prove. The hard part is getting your book noticed so readers can find it. It doesn't matter if it's the greatest book of all time, if no one knows about it, no one will read it.
12. What do your family and friends think about your books?
My mom loved Enchantment and Taken, but thought they were a little too steamy. She wanted to edit out the "naughty bits and swear words" with a black magic marker, but Taken isn't available in print and it would ruin her Kindle ;-) My husband liked Enchantment, but he loved Taken. No one else in my family has read the books.
13. What do you like to do when you are not writing?
READ! I love to lose myself in a good book. I also enjoy archery and biking although I don't do much of either anymore.
14. Do you have any suggestions to help aspiring writers better themselves and their craft? If so, what are they?
Get these books and STUDY them: "Story Engineering" by Larry Brooks; "Writing Fiction for Dummies" by Randy Ingermanson and "Characters & Viewpoint" by Orson Scott Card. Go to a writers' workshop or two. But don't wait until you think you're "good enough" to start writing. If you have a story inside you just bursting to get out, set it free. You can always rework it after your skills improve.
15. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I wanted to be a horse. Once I figured out that wasn't going to happen, I decided I'd have to settle for being a ballerina.
16. What are your favourite books and which authors inspire you?
"The Destiny Series" by Nancy Straight; "The Cambion Series" by Shannon Dermott; "The Significance Series" by Shelly Crane; "The War of the Fae Series" by Elle Casey; "The Grey Wolves Series" by Quinn Loftis; I could go on and on. There's so many great indie authors producing great stories at affordable prices. I adore my Kindle ;-)
17. For an aspiring writer what do you feel are certain do's and don’ts for getting their material published?
Do hire a professional cover artist and editor. Especially the editor. If your cover is crap, no one will buy your book, which is sad … but if you publish a book full of typos, plot holes, and inconsistencies it can ruin your reputation. So DON'T do it! If you can't afford to hire an editor, save up until you can or barter services. I can't emphasize this enough. It's impossible to edit your own writing. Your friends and family won't want to hurt your feelings so they won't tell you to rewrite the entire middle section of  your book because it's boring. I use and recommend Kris at www.final-edits.com
18. What are you working on now?
"River's Recruit" the first book of "The Sanctuary Series" is  a New Adult Paranormal Romance.
Devastated by the death of his identical twin, Jonathan McKnight flees into the Sawatch Mountain Wilderness. He seeks redemption, but all he finds is trouble … and a beautiful young woman named River that belongs to a primitive and dangerous cult.
Jonathan wants to rescue River and take her back to his world. River wants to recruit him. Fate has other plans for both of them.

My Review:

"*I received a copy of this book for free to review from Sourcebooks, this in no way
influenced my review, all opinions are 100% honest and my own."

I was sent this about a month ago. And finally got the chance to sit down and read it. Well Embrace was a little better. However, Entice answered a LOT of questions that you were dying to know.  There is only two things that really kind of were predictable. I don;t want to give anything away but, I do believe that pretty much everyone who reads this book will already know who the traitor is as well as who Violets angel maker is.  I think it would have been better if her angel maker would have been deity. If God him or her self would have made Violet. THAT would have been a REALLY BIG moment. Since it seems that god whomever he or she may be is just not in the picture in this series.

Now even though I didn't get my OMG moment from those two events. The ending to this book will leave you with a stunned face of OMG I cant believe that is the ending.  I cant wait for the next book Emblaze due out here soon.  So I will keep you guys posted about when I get the next ARC in this amazing series.

For my rating Entice looses 1 star for just disappointing me in the Maker and Traitor  section. So 4 Stars for Enticed.

The Violet Eden Chapters (Embrace Series)

Book Description

March 6, 2012 Embrace
It starts with a whisper: "It's time for you to know who you are..."
On her 17th birthday, everything will change for Violet Eden. The boy she loves will betray her. Her enemy will save her. She will have to decide just how much she's willing to sacrifice.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, EMBRACE is a compelling novel of good and evil, seductive desires and impossible choices. A centuries old war between fallen angels and the protectors of humanity chooses a new fighter. It's a battle Violet doesn't want, but she lives her life by two rules: don't run and don't quit. If angels seek vengeance and humans are the warriors, you could do a lot worse than betting on Violet Eden.

LINCOLN: He's been Violet's one anchor, her running partner and kickboxing trainer. Only he never told her he's Grigori—part human, part angel—and that he was training her for an ancient battle between Angels and Exiles.

PHOENIX: No one knows where his loyalties lie, yet he's the only one there to pick up the pieces and protect her after Lincoln's lies. In a world of dark and light, he is all shades of gray.

Two sides: Angel or Exile.
Two guys: Lincoln or Phoenix.
The wrong choice could cost not only her life, but her eternity...

"In her YA paranormal romance debut, Jessica Shirvington combines "the badass-action of Vampire Academy, the complex love triangles of Twilight, and the angel mythology of Fallen, taken one step further." —Book Couture

"Shirvington's debut is smart, edgy and addictive—and sure to leave readers clamoring for the rest of the series."— Kirkus Reviews, STARRED

"One of the best YA novels we've seen in a while. Get ready for a confident, kick-butt, well-defined heroine." — RT Book Reviews

My girl,
Happy 17th birthday. I wish I could be there with you, but I think if you are reading this...I am not. For that, I am sorry. The day your dad and I found out we were going to have a baby was the happiest day of my long life. I know the only day that will exceed that joy will be the day you are born – no matter how that day ends.
A big decision lies ahead. The burden of the covenant is a heavy one to bear. Choose with your heart, for I already know that you, my girl, must let your heart guide the way.
I love you. Please forgive me.

My Review:  Thanks to Sourcebooks for sending me a review copy of this book!
When I got this book I was on break from all thing angels. I had just finished a lot of books with them and was just kind of done with that race. I really didnt want ANYTHING to do with them.

But, I worked through it and found a wonderful new series to fall in love with.  Jessica Shirvington isnt afraid to go there if you know what I mean. With sexy characters that you both love and love to hate. And a wonderful plot. I couldnt put Embrace down. And unlike a lot of books out there. Embrace has a meaning to the title.

*I was recently sent a copy of book 2 in this series (Embrace) called Entice.  So I had to go back and reread book 1. Which was a great idea as there were a lot of things that I had forgotten the first time around.

So even the second time reading Embrace I fell in love with all the characters all over again.

So Embrace was a big 5 stars both times.

Here is my org. review-

Angels have always had to dwell in the house of the lord. Always listen to the word of god. But, what if angels had free will? Would it be good or bad?
Well Embrace answers this question......and its NOT pretty!

This book has something in common with the House of Night books by P.C and Kristen Cast.

That just because something is light doesn't always mean that it is good.  As the goddess Nyx says:

Darkness does not alway equate to evil, Just as Light does not always bring good.

So my one BIG question in this book is where is god in all of this.  It seems that he/she has taken a vacation and is not around right now.  The angels have the reins and are using them to their advantage.

In the end this book was wonderful.  It was a little slow at times so take your time with it.  But it is worth reading!

Ill leave you with some words from the book and also from the bible.  (yes the bible can have some really good end lines lol!  Even me being a witch I can't deny that)

"This is your fate, the destiny I have planned for you......"

Jeremiah 13:25

And with that Farwell and May You Embrace YOUR Destiny!

Inkwood Books Healthy, Seeking 'Right Person'

Inkwood Books Healthy, Seeking 'Right Person'

Inkwood Books Healthy, Seeking 'Right Person'

More on Inkwood Books, Tampa, Fla., the 20-year-old bookstore founded by Carla Jiminez and Leslie Reiner that is for sale.
For starters, the owners emphasize that the store is in great shape, business is continuing as usual and Inkwood is not closing.

As Jiminez wrote: "We are fortunate to be frugal debt-averse penny-pinchers and have a healthy shop with fine financials for the right person to carry on what we've created here."

And on Facebook, the store posted: "Inkwood is a wonderful turnkey opportunity, with healthy numbers and no debt, a great reputation near and far, and supportive customers. We expect a new owner will continue what we started with a seamless transition."

Sales at Inkwood continue to grow and the store is profitable. The owners, the Tampa Tribunewrote, are "only interested in selling to someone with a deep commitment to what the store stands for: independence, a love of books and a love of relationships with customers."

That search has gone well. "Early this summer," the paper continued, "the bookstore quietly contacted about 50 close supporters to let them know about a potential sale and gauge their interest in buying the operation. Since then, the list has been winnowed to four potential buyers."
