#BookDiscussion: Writing Books from Other Cultures

This week we're talking about if authors should write books from cultures not their own.  For me I think if the author does their homework I don't see why the author shouldn't be able to do so.  I mean if you take all those fantasy books out they're authors draw on other cultures for those.  So I don't see why this would be any different.
So what books are from authors and cultures not their own.  If memory serves Emily R. King's series The Hundredth Queen is not set in her own culture and even though it is a fantasy.  I think she did a wonderful job blending the story together.

With the new hashtag of #OwnVoices and #WOC and #POC and the rest of them.  I think that a lot of other works have been lost in the shuffle.  I am one of those readers that I read a book for the book not the author.  I don't really care who the author is or what religion, color of their skin, or their culture.  I will read the book regardless of any of that.  I just really don't care at all.

I know a few months back I think it was sometime last year.  An author stated she didn't write her book for white folk and well that went over as well as you think it would.  And it made a lot of people not want to read her title.  I had already done so and will be grabbing book two.  It was amazing and I could not put it down.  But its things like this that make me want to separate authors and their books.  So it all came down to me really kind of ignoring the author and just enjoying a good read/story.

So what's your take?  Are you like me and think that if an author does research and does things the right way that they should be able to read what they want regardless of what culture they are from and what they are writing about.  Or do you think that everyone should stick to their own culture etc and be done with it?  Let me know in the comments.
