Book Description

July 3, 2012
Orphaned at the age of six, Jane Williams has grown up in a series of foster homes, learning to survive in the shadows of life. Through hard work and determination, she manages to win a scholarship to the exclusive Birch Grove Academy. There, for the first time, Jane finds herself accepted by a group of friends. She even starts tutoring the headmistress’s gorgeous son, Lucien. Things seem too good to be true.
They are.

The more she learns about Birch Grove’s recent past, the more Jane comes to suspect that there is something sinister going on. Why did the wife of a popular teacher kill herself? What happened to the former scholarship student, whose place Jane took? Why does Lucien’s brother, Jack, seem to dislike her so much?

As Jane begins to piece together the answers to the puzzle, she must find out why she was brought to Birch Grove—and what she would risk to stay there….

Ok this one I LOVED. When I started this book two days ago I had been reading like mad.  I had been 1/2 way though a few books that started out wonderful but then then the plot fizzled out and died of boredom.  I was kinda scared that this one was going to do the same thing.  Being almost 400 pages I was very scared!!!

this review will contain spoilers
But happily I was surprised and loving it by the early chapters.  I will say that this book drips with mystery!  You don't find out what is really going on until 1/2 way through the book.  BUT thats OK!  Marta Acosta does this in such a way that you just love the characters so much that the book could have been 600 pages and would have been great!

I did ask the author if this was a stand alone or a series.  And I am sad to report that it is a standalone. But she is writing a Companion novel lol (pun pun) about one of the characters.  MV or Mary Violet! When I got the tweet saying this I about jumped for joy!  She may not have been a main character in Dark Companion but I LOVE her!!

She has a jena se qua which means that she is Fantabulous!  LOL Read the book and your ill understand!

So without giving anything away!  This book had a few things in common with a few OTHER series out there.

Evernight- This one is a BIG comparison!  As in Evernight you don't find out what is really going on until you are well into the book.

The Vampire Academy & The House of Night-  The comparison for this one is the blooddrinking.  With the relationship that Rose had with Lisa.  This is the same for the relationship that Heath had with Zoey in the House of Night as well.

The House of Night- This one also had a thing in common I believe with the goddess Nyx.  Although it is not her that shows up in this story it is similar.

Well with all of the similarities with these three other series.  Dark Companion was wonderful!  As soon as I finished reading it last night at around 11pm EST. I got on my iPhone and pre-ordered a copy!  I have never done that before. lol.
