#BookReview for Burning Midnight by Will McIntosh

Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old David Sullivan’s life is about to change—all because of one tiny, priceless item found in the murky bottom of a Brooklyn water tower.

Sully is a sphere dealer at a flea market. It doesn’t pay much—Alex Holliday’s stores have muscled out most of the independent sellers—but it helps him and his mom make rent.

No one knows where the brilliant-colored spheres came from. One day they were just there, hidden all over the earth like huge gemstones. Burn a pair and they make you a little better: an inch taller, skilled at math, better-looking. The rarer the sphere, the more expensive—and the greater the improvement.

When Sully meets Hunter, a girl with a natural talent for finding spheres, the two start searching together. One day they find a Gold—a color no one has ever seen. And when Alex Holliday learns what they have, he will go to any lengths, will use all of his wealth and power, to take it from them.

There’s no question the Gold is worth millions, but what does it actually do? None of them is aware of it yet, but the fate of the world rests on this little golden orb. Because all the world fights over the spheres, but no one knows where they come from, what their powers are, or why they’re here.

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟
My Review: Well this one was pretty interesting I do think that this would be better suited for low young adult readers and high middle grade readers.  It works well as a transition title.  Some things in this one were a little far fetched and I really wished that it would have started before the orbs showed up.  It would have given us some great backstory.  As it sits it felt like we were dropped into a world that was already going and such was slightly confusing.  I ended up going back and reading the first few chapters twice just to make sure I had a good grasp on it.

Other than those things this was a pretty cute book.  I like the idea of the orbs and that no one knew where they came from. It was something that I had never seen before.

★ “This is speculative fiction at its most personal and powerful, extrapolating current social and technological trends and exploring how they would affect future people. . . . Intriguing, quirky, perversely charming and definitely affecting.” —Kirkus Reviews on Love Minus Eighty, Starred Review

“[Love Minus Eighty] manages to deliver a light, romantic story without ever sacrificing its dark vision of the future.” —i09.com

“McIntosh is without a doubt one of the most underrated science fiction authors writing today. Defenders is an emotional, action-packed story. . . . McIntosh’s cautionary near-future tale, told from multiple perspectives, serves as a brutally honest portrayal of how humans carelessly exploit, destroy— and in this case create—other species.” —RT Book Reviews (Top Pick)
