#BookReview: Crown of Bones (Amassia #1) by A.K. Wilder

Synopsis: Raise. Your. Phantom.

For fans of epic fantasies and sweeping adventures, this ensemble cast will immerse you in a world of unique magic, breathtaking action and unforgettable characters.

In a world on the brink of the next Great Dying, no amount of training can prepare us for what is to come …

A young heir will raise the most powerful phantom in all of Baiseen.

A dangerous High Savant will do anything to control the nine realms.

A mysterious and deadly Mar race will steal children into the sea.

And a handsome guide with far too many secrets will make me fall in love.

My name is Ash. A lowly scribe meant to observe and record. And yet I think I’m destined to surprise us all.

My Review:  I was so excited for this book but once I actually started I found that this read closer to an adult fantasy than a young adult one. I felt that the story was trying to do too much all at once.  It was a blend of fantasy, magic, high-seas, and romance.  I wished that I would have loved it but sadly that just didn't happen.  I loved the idea of the phantoms, that is magic that was very new and that I hadn't seen before.  The dual POV just didn't work for me. It felt like I was pulled out of the story every time it changed.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—In a realm of kingdoms full of adventure, intrigue, and romance, the characters central to this story must prevail in order to save their world from the next Great Dying. Told from multiple points of view, the story centers around the evolution of three main characters, Marcus, Ash, and Kaylin. Marcus Adicio, son of the Magistrate, Heir to the Throne, and a green-robed savant from Baiseen, must learn how to work with the powerful warrior savant he raises. Ash, a female Baiseen scribe who accompanies Marcus, writes of his exploits as she believes she has no magical gifts of her own. Kaylin portrays himself as a simple pirate-turned-guide who only has eyes for Ash, but he has an uncanny affinity for mermaids and other creatures of the deep. As the relationships grow between the three characters, savants, and the wider world, the world begins to teeter on the brink of cataclysm. Wilder has created a magical, enthralling world that keeps readers engaged from the first page. Most characters are cued as white and male, apart from Ash, a strong female lead. VERDICT Recommended for fantasy fans, especially those who enjoyed Leigh Bardugo's "Shadow and Bone" trilogy and Rin Chupeco's "The Bone Witch" trilogy.—Susan Catlett, Green Run H.S., Virginia Beach
