#BookReview: King's Cage (Red Queen #3) by Victoria Aveyard

Synopsis: In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s bestselling Red Queen series, allegiances are tested on every side. And when the Lightning Girl's spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother's web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare's heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.

My Review: I started this series again after not completing it when it all first came out.  And well I thought I was going to be so happy and overjoyed with it.  I devoured Red Queen when it first came out and loved every page of it.  But sadly that is not how this journey ended.  I started a book club to finish up series I hadn't finished and this was the second series on that list.  And I have to say I am unimpressed.  This book was so bogged down with Mare showing us her day to day life that I was bored to tears.  I did skim the last half of the book and it never got better.  Which was super sad.  I wished that it would have been cut by at least 100-200 pages and would have gotten super dark. Or at least darker than it was.

Review

Plenty of schemes amid royal fissures and ill-fated rescues, an assassination attempt, and raging battles on multiple fronts...The majority of the tale is again seen through the eyes of Aveyard's 'little lightning girl, ' who remains a relatable and deeply flawed heroine. Concluding as hope dwindles that the Reds will ever be free of the Silver crown, Aveyard adeptly sets the scene for a fourth book to follow, amid a war not yet won.

Simmering with internal conflict and well-devised courtly scheming.
