#BookReview: Shock of Fate (Anchoress #1) by D.L. Armillei

Synopsis: One ordinary teenager. One extraordinary mission. And a destiny she never expected.

Like every other teenager on Providence Island, fifteen-year-old Vanessa Cross is so ready to party her summer away—until her father disappears. And rumors fly that he’s a traitor.

Plucked from her ordinary life to journey to an alternate world to retrieve a priceless relic, Van bends—okay, breaks—the rules to sneak her best friend along to help with a quest of her own. Find her father. Prove his innocence.

What she finds will test her heart, her wits, and her courage, and push her along a stumbling path toward a destiny she never expected or wanted. Failure to rise to the challenge could destroy her friends. What’s left of her family. And the people she was born to protect.

My Review: This story starts right in the middle of things. And although usually I feel super lost when that happens. This one was actually pretty easy to follow.  I loved how the story progressed but I have to say that it took a while for me to really care about the characters.  I did enjoy how these teens really felt like teens. They made bad choices and had to learn things along the way. I think that the blend of fantasy and sci-fi was wonderfully done. And I am excited to check out the next title.

About the Author

A Massachusetts native, D. L. Armillei now splits her time between living in her home state and Florida. She can often be found sweating in a Zumba class, playing in the Universal and Disney parks, or hanging around tiki huts as long as they're on white sandy beaches. Being under the impression she's a treasure hunter, she sometimes scuba dives but usually chickens out and ends up snorkeling.  --This text refers to the hardcover edition.
