Legacy of the Clockwork Key (The Secret Order #1) by Kristin Bailey #Review

When a fire consumes Meg’s home, killing her parents and destroying both her fortune and her future, all she has left is the tarnished pocket watch she rescued from the ashes. But this is no ordinary timepiece. The clock turns out to be a mechanical key—a key that only Meg can use—that unlocks a series of deadly secrets and intricate clues that Meg is compelled to follow.

Together with the handsome stable hand she barely knows but hopes she can trust, Meg is swept into a hidden world of deception, betrayal, and revenge, uncovering evidence of an elite secret society and a dangerous invention that some will stop at nothing to protect.

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys is Choppy at best #Review

Winter, 1945. Four teenagers. Four secrets.

Each one born of a different homeland; each one hunted, and haunted, by tragedy, lies…and war.

As thousands of desperate refugees flock to the coast in the midst of a Soviet advance, four paths converge, vying for passage aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship that promises safety and freedom.

Yet not all promises can be kept.

Inspired by the single greatest tragedy in maritime history, bestselling and award-winning author Ruta Sepetys (Between Shades of Gray) lifts the veil on a shockingly little-known casualty of World War II. An illuminating and life-affirming tale of heart and hope.

#BookTalks: Content in YA Should they have ratings? – (@CleanTeenPub)

This week were talking about Content in YA. Just like movies books are for a variety of ages.  Well just like movies shouldnt books have a rating system for their content?  One publisher thinks so.

Clean Teen Publishing has created a wonderful easy way to know if a book is right for you.  With a wonderful system they call Content Disclosure.  And well I have to say that I LOVE IT!!

Here is how their ratings work:

How our ratings are configured:

We rate our books by using a 5-point scale in four different categories.  The categories are as follows: Language, Romance, Violence, and Drugs/Alcohol/Smoking.  On the back of the book, you will see one of the trees above with the following ratings:
  • YAe | Deemed appropriate for everyone including advanced readers 12 and under.
  • YA | Appropriate for the average Young Adult audience, which is usually 13 and up.
  • YAm | This book is written for the mature young adult audience.
*If any of the material in the book maxes out on our 5-point scale in any category, then the book will automatically be rated YAm.

The total rating is determined when the scores for each category are added and divided by 4 to find the average score for the book.

  • If the average rating is between 0-1, then the book will be labeled YAe.
  • If the book is between 2-3, then the book will be labeled YA.
  • If the book has a rating between 4-5 or if any category is maxed out with 5 points, it will be rated YAm.
The leaves of the tree give you a short glimpse as to how the book received its rating.
If you would like more details on why a category was scored a certain way, you can check out the QR code on the back of the book or simply visit our website. The QR code will take you directly to our site, where you will find a detailed content disclosure for the book. If you purchase the book in ebook format, the tree and the QR code will be located within the first three pages of the book.

  • We’ve worked tirelessly to put together a non-subjective rating system for the YA genre.  We know that everyone’s values are different.  If you find that you don’t agree with the order in which something was put under a category, then we encourage you to go to the page by using the QR code so that you can access the book’s detailed information. We know our rating system may not be perfect for everyone; that is why we try and give you as much information about the book’s content as we can..
  • Please note that we are only human and while our rating system is not subjective, we can’t guarantee that we won’t ever miss a major event that could have affected the rating
  • Our rating system is a work in progress.  Check back frequently for new info.

You can check out their Content Disclosure here

I really love this rating system!  So what do you think, do you think that more publishers should adopt something like this? Let us know in the comments!

#Review of Alcatraz Versus the Knights of Crystallia (Alcatraz, #3) by @BrandSanderson

Alcatraz Versus the Knights of Crystallia (Alcatraz, #3)Nancy Pearl loves this series and we do too!

When Alcatraz and Grandpa Smedry make a pilgrimage to the Free Kingdom city of Crystallia, the Smedry home base, Alcatraz is shocked to see that he is, in fact, a legend. When he was a baby he was stolen by the Evil Librarians, and his mother, a Librarian herself, was behind the whole scheme. Now, with his estranged father, who is acting indeed strange, Bastille, who has been stripped of her armor, and Grandpa Smedry, who is, as always, late to everything (that's his Talent), Alcatraz tries to save a city under siege. From who? Why, the Librarians of course!

#Shadowhunters Saturday: That KISS!! and the newest discussion with @emmmabooks

Welcome to another post about Shadowhunters!  At the time I'm writing this we just got a front row seat of Alex and Magnus sucking face. And well a ton of people had issues with this.  My biggest question is this though.  Since they aged Clary to 18 did they do that with the rest of the kids? Because could this have been what would have happened if Alex would have been older?  I know that these are not supposed to be word for word via the books like most shows but they should stay true to the character themselves.

Im still so all over the place with this show. It has its good parts then its really really bad parts. and its just ugh all over!

#TakeControlTBR: The Arrivals by Melissa Marr

Heres another update on my picks for April so far it hasn't been good!  This one The Arrivals would have been much much better if the world that the people were tossed into would have had a better explanation. World building is a must in my book for the most part and this one lacked that in spades.   The other thing was that it was pretty boring once it got started.  So for me this one won't be sticking around.

You can check it out here on Goodreads

#Review of How to Disappear by @AnnStampler & #Giveaway via @simonteen

How to DisappearThis electric cross-country thriller follows the game of cat and mouse between a girl on the run from a murder she witnessed—or committed?—and the boy who’s sent to kill her.

Nicolette Holland is the girl everyone likes. Up for adventure. Loyal to a fault. And she’s pretty sure she can get away with anything...until a young woman is brutally murdered in the woods near Nicolette’s house. Which is why she has to disappear.

Jack Manx has always been the stand-up guy with the killer last name. But straight A’s and athletic trophies can’t make people forget that his father was a hit man and his brother is doing time for armed assault. Just when Jack is about to graduate from his Las Vegas high school and head east for college, his brother pulls him into the family business with inescapable instructions: find this ruthless Nicolette Holland and get rid of her. Or else Jack and everyone he loves will pay the price.

As Nicolette and Jack race to outsmart each other, tensions—and attractions—run high. Told in alternating voices, this tightly plotted mystery and tense love story challenges our assumptions about right and wrong, guilt and innocence, truth and lies.

#BookTalks To Post or Not Post with @WitchReader

Thanks for checking out this weeks Book Talks.  So this week were talking about wither or not we should post about certain books.  Ive been reading and posting about books for almost 10 years. WOW how the time flies by!  This year well be celebrating our 7th anniversary in Oct.  And well its been a long time running!

So for the most part we do reviews for all books we read.  Now there are quite a few the ive read via my owned books that for whatever reason I didnt post a review. Most of those are books that I DNFed very shortly into the book and just didnt think about taking the time to say hey I read 10 pages of this book and well I thought it sucked!  I just didnt see the point in it.

But there comes a time when you just need to ask yourself.

SHOULD YOU POST?

So heres this weeks question.  Do you think we should post about books we DNF or just downright HATE?

Ive been thinking about this for some time.  Maybe we could do a weekly meme of DNFed or Dumped books or something.  And then leave the full posts to those we loved!!

So let us know in the comments on what you think!
